Chapter 21: The Visiting Room
"You don't have to go," I said.
We were in Gran's kitchen at six in the morning. Annie had been dressed since five.
"I know I don't."
"He wants something."
"I know that too." She put her coffee cup in the sink. "He's had five years of me in a room, telling me what happened. I'm going to have one of him."
"Then I'm driving you."
"You're driving me," she said. "And you're standing where he can see you. That's all."
The county jail was out past the airport, low and tan, with razor wire on the fences.
I'd done nine months there before my trial.
The guard at the visitors' desk was one I remembered. He looked at my face and then at the name on Annie's visitor form, and he didn't say anything, but he moved us up the list.
The visiting room was a row of booths with thick glass and black phones on cords.
Annie sat down in booth four with her cane across her knees.
I stood against the back wall, behind her, where I'd been told.
The door on the other side opened.
Bryce came in wearing orange.
They'd taken his ring. His hair wasn't done. Without the tan and the cologne he looked like somebody's cousin.
He saw Annie and his whole face lit up.
