Chapter 19: Do You Love Me or the Vote
"Not in a ballroom," Rowan said.
He said it quietly, with his thumb on the back of my hand.
"Give me the house."
The Lincoln Park house was dark and narrow behind its iron fence.
I used the key from the lectern, the one with the tag that said Willa's room.
The front door opened onto the smell of lilies and polish.
The third stair creaked under my heel, as it always did.
I did not turn on a light.
Rowan followed me up three flights, past the bedrooms I had made every morning, to the narrow door under the roof.
My room was exactly as I had left it on Sunday.
A single bed.
A slanted ceiling, close enough to touch.
One window, with a view of the neighbor's chimney.
I stood in the middle of it and felt I had come back to a place I'd already outgrown.
"Ask me again," Rowan said from the doorway.
He had to duck his head to keep from hitting the beam.
