Chapter 18: Off the Case
I held his hand in that pantry until his breathing was mine.
Then I stood up and opened the swinging door an inch.
Aldous was still carving.
Still humming.
Kitty sat beside him with a plate she hadn't touched.
She was looking at the pantry door.
Our eyes met through the gap, and she looked away first.
【Kitty saw. She saw him leave.】
【Kitty knows SOMETHING. Look at her face.】
We didn't go back to the table.
We went out the kitchen door into the snow and drove back to the city at eleven at night, with my guard behind us and the radio off.
Lucas didn't sing.
He didn't speak until the George Washington Bridge.
"Tell Marge," he said. "Everything. Tonight."
On the morning of the twenty-sixth I sat in Marge's office with the door shut.
I told her the humming, and how Lucas went still when he heard it.
She listened with her reading glasses in her hand, not on her head, which meant it was serious.
When I was done she sat for a long time.
"Okay," she said. "I'm taking it upstairs."
