Chapter 26: In Handcuffs
Lucas stopped.
He didn't go back down either.
He stood one step below me with his hands open at his sides.
He'd been watching me.
"Okay," he said. "No more steps."
I didn't take my eyes off the gun.
The barrel was shaking now.
That's the most dangerous minute of any call.
"Aldous," I said. "Look at me, not him."
He didn't.
"I could have been you," he said to Lucas. "I was the oldest. I was the one who sat with you. And they gave everything to a boy who couldn't even talk."
"I know," Lucas said.
"You don't know anything."
"I know you cut the crusts off," Lucas said.
Aldous went still.
"In the boathouse," Lucas said. "Every sandwich. No crusts. I didn't eat crusts when I was little. Only my family knew that."
The ballroom was so quiet I could hear the fountain on Fifth through the doors.
"I knew it was you on the third day," Lucas said. "When the crusts were gone. And I made myself forget it, because you were the one who taught me to ride a bike."
