Chapter 7: The Post
Lucas opened his eyes.
"Everyone knew the code," he said. "My parents. My grandparents. The cook. The groundskeeper. Half the family came up every weekend."
"How many people is half the family?"
"Thirty. Forty." He rubbed his face. "The police interviewed all of them. Nobody had a reason."
"Somebody did."
He didn't answer that.
He walked me to my bedroom door at the far end of the hall from his.
We stood there for a second.
Then he said goodnight and went to his own room, and I heard his lock turn.
I lay awake listening to an old house settle and thought about forty people who knew four numbers.

Monday morning, my guard handed me the Post through the car window without a word.

He was standing outside my precinct holding my coffee and a paperback, looking about as menacing as a mailbox.
"A source close to the bride's family says the new Mrs. Thackeray cannot leave her home without an armed escort. 'He's done this before,' the source said. 'He'll do it to her too.'"
He's done this before.
He hadn't done anything before.
He'd never been married.
