Chapter 13: The Stones
Hurn did not shout.
He walked up to the little fire and looked at the old man and the lame boy.
He looked at Kesh on her knees.
He looked at the strange woman in the purple coat, sitting in the snow with a child.
"So it is true," he said. "She is still here."
Two hunters stepped behind Lois.
One put a spear point against her coat.
It was not hard, but it was there.
"Hey," Lois said, standing up slowly. "Hey, now. Let's not."
Hurn paid her no attention.
He nodded at Kesh, and a hunter looped a leather rope around her wrists.
She did not fight.
She only looked at Ilu, and kept looking.
"You'll all come," Hurn said. "The whole camp is waiting at the cave. Oro has something to say."
"Oro didn't say that," Kesh answered.
"He will."
Ilu felt a hand close on her collar.
She twisted and shouted, "Mar!"
Lois turned.
Three feet away, a hunter had scooped the child up by the back of her purple coat, and Ilu's boots kicked in the air.
"Put her down," said Lois.
Nobody moved.
"Put. Her. Down."
The spear point pressed into her side.
The sun was a full hand over the ridge now.
