Torin woke at nine with a jolt.
His arm tightened around Ansel before his eyes were open.
Then he saw the daylight and the room.
He saw Ansel looking back at him from the pillow.
Something in his face shut.
Ansel had been awake for an hour.
He had spent it studying the scar through Torin's eyebrow and the gauze on his hand, and deciding what to say.
"You stayed."
"I said I would."
"You stayed because of the deal."
He sat up and swung his legs out of bed.
The sheet fell away, and the marks Ansel had left on his shoulders showed red in the daylight.
His back was to Ansel, a long scarred plane of muscle, and his voice went cold and level.
