Chapter 20: Decision
The dean's office called at ten on Monday morning, and Ansel took the call standing in the stairwell.
He listened for three minutes and said "Thank you" four times.
Then he walked out of Marsh Hall without his jacket.
Torin was leaning on the truck at the curb, where he had been waiting since nine.
"Probation," Ansel said.
"One semester, with a mandatory ethics course and a note in my file.
"I keep my scholarship."
Torin did not say anything.
He crossed the sidewalk, picked Ansel up off his feet, and held him there with his face in his neck.
"And Dane?" he said at last, into his collar.
"Referred to the conduct board for purchasing work and for threatening a student.
"The assistant said the nine orders were enough, and the messages made it worse.
"It goes to a hearing next week."
"And the video?"
"The panel saw why you did it.
"They sent it to the coach with a note."
Torin set him down slowly.
His eyes were wet, and he did not hide it.
"Come home with me," he said.
"I have a pot of chili in the fridge, and a bed."
Cedar Street was quiet in the afternoon.
