Chapter 16: The Chair They Wanted
The school waiting room contained a chair nobody could sit in safely.
It stood on a small platform beneath the commissioner's ceremonial portrait.
Its embroidered cushion slid forward whenever an attendant straightened it.
Shuqiao put his hamper beside an ordinary bench.
He wanted the position, and that made the room harder to judge calmly.
His uncle had arrived before him with Shumo.
Both occupied chairs near the platform.
The cousin wore the embroidered shoes he'd offered Shuqiao yesterday.
Their fit appeared excellent.
"I see the gift found its intended recipient," Shuqiao said.
Shumo placed his feet beneath his chair.
"I brought my uncle for support."
"I brought plums," Shuqiao replied.
An older candidate on the bench made room for the hamper.
He looked exhausted by his own ceremonial hat.
Shuqiao offered him a plum and received a grateful nod.
