Chapter 10: Folding Table
The laundry room was the last place in the building I would have thought to be undressed.
It was in the basement, down a flight of concrete stairs, a long low room of painted cinder block with two washers and two dryers against one wall and a folding table in the middle, a slab of laminate on steel legs.
The dryers were running.
Somebody's sheets were going around in the left one, thumping, and the fluorescent tube buzzed above them.
It was eleven o'clock on Friday night.
I had come down the back stairs in a skirt and a sweater with a basket of towels as my alibi, because Rafa's text had said: Laundry. Eleven. Bring nothing but yourself.
He was standing by the folding table with his sleeves rolled to the elbow.
He hadn't touched me since Saturday.
Not in the hall, not on the stairs, not after the audit.
He had been polite, and exact, and the super, and I had spent four days wanting to scream.
"You came," he said.
"I brought towels."
"Put them down."
I put the basket on the table.
I stood there with my hands at my sides, and the dryer thumped, and I said the thing I had come down to say.
"I didn't mean it the way it sounded."
"Magda," he said.
"On the stairs. I said you were the super because I didn't know how to say the other thing. I don't know how to say it. I never have."
"You don't have to."
"Yes, I do." My voice was shaking. "My husband used to say I was impossible to give anything to. And the last thing he said, on his way out the door, was, you never asked me for a thing in eleven years. You made a person quit."
He stood very still.
"I thought he was right," I said. "I still think he's partly right. I stood on that landing and I couldn't ask you to stay in the room. I had to turn you into a pipe wrench. And you were the only person in two years who ever looked at me, and I did that to you."
