Chapter 11: Over My Knee
I had never been in Rafa's apartment.
On Sunday afternoon I stood in the doorway of it in my coat and could not think of anything to say.
It was neat.
That was the first thing, and it surprised me, since he spent his life with his arms inside walls.
A single room with a kitchen along one side, a short hallway to a bedroom, a rag rug on a swept wood floor, a couch with a folded blanket on one arm.
There was one lamp, lit, on a table by the window.
The light fell yellow across a bookshelf of paperbacks and a row of manuals with cracked spines.
On the shelf stood a framed photograph of an older man in a straw hat, squinting in a bright yard, with his hand on the shoulder of a grinning boy of about ten.
"My uncle," Rafa said behind me. "He had the building before me."
"He looks kind."
"He was a pain. He was right about everything." He shut the door and turned the lock. "Give me your coat."
I gave him my coat.
He hung it on a hook.
I stood in the middle of his rug in my stocking feet, listening to a radio playing somewhere over our heads, an accordion polka, tinny and cheerful.
"That's Dolores," he said. "She's right above us."
"She can hear us?"
"She's seventy-nine. She hears what she wants." He took my hand.
"My sink's dripping," I said.
It came out of me before I had decided to say it.
He looked at me.
"My sink," I said again. "It started again Saturday. It's a small drip. I thought you'd want to know."
He didn't say anything.
He searched my face, and something moved behind his eyes.
