Chapter 20: The Lobby

Magda's POV

The lobby is a tiled vestibule with six brass mailboxes and one wooden bench, and by five to seven we had filled it.

Dolores had brought her own folding chair and a thermos, and she sat in the front row with her cane across her knees.

The man from 2F wore a collared shirt.

The woman from 2R had made a sign, and then thought better of it, and held it facedown against her chest.

Rafa stood against the back wall by the mailboxes with his arms crossed.

He looked at me when I came in, and I looked away on purpose, because I had not slept.

Dennis arrived at seven exactly with his clipboard and a young man in a company jacket who carried nothing and looked at his phone.

"Thank you all for coming," Dennis said. "Going forward, this will be efficient."

"Sit down, Dennis," said Dolores.

"I prefer to stand."

"Then stand efficiently."

Someone laughed, and Dennis's smile held.

"I'd like to introduce the company's new maintenance partner," he said, and nodded at the young man, "and to remind everyone that Mr. Ibarra's tenancy as superintendent concludes on January 31st. I'd also like to read into the record the supplemental statement Mr. Ibarra submitted Tuesday."

He took a sheet of paper from the clipboard.

"'Any fault belongs to Rafael Ibarra alone.' Which is helpful. The company thanks him for his candor."
