Chapter 15: The Offer
Pennington stopped at the curb outside the bay and planted the mop handle.
"I'm not here to cut anything," he said. "I'd like to talk."
"Talk from there."
The night shift had come to the bay doors behind me.
Connor was there too, in his lacrosse hoodie, with his new band on his wrist.
Pennington looked past us at the shapes under sheets on the bay floor.
"How many?"
"Eleven."
"I'm sorry about the medic," he said, the way he says it to families.
"You sent the bus."
"The Green sent the bus," he said, and turned his wrist so I could read Rank Four.
"I came to offer you a way out of nights like that."
He pointed the mop handle at Connor, and then at Gloria.
"Your son. Your clerk. Every green body in this building. A place in the Green by tonight, warm and fed."
"For what?"
"Close the Red. Chain the bay doors."
"And the sick?"
"The sick wait."
"Go home, Bradford."
He didn't go.
"You still don't know what you're arguing with."
"I know it lives in a tent at the harbor."
