Chapter 24: The Next Board
"A day off," I said. "One whole day, with nobody red in it."
"That's it?"
"And you in it."
Calvin looked at his coffee for a while.
"Done," he said.
He didn't get it for me until April.
By April, Patterson General had city power again, and a waiting room with a new skylight.
On the morning of my day off, I came downstairs in my own rowhouse in Highlandtown at ten o'clock.
Calvin was standing at my stove in his socks, making eggs wrong.
"You put the cheese in too early," I said.
"I've been making eggs for forty-four years."
"Wrong, for forty-four years."
He put the plate down in front of me and kissed the top of my head where the gray is.
Connor came in the back door with his lacrosse stick over his shoulder and a canvas bag of paper messages.
The phones worked again in most of the city, but not in Canton, and not on the far side of the park.
So the city paid a Runner.
His band said Rank Two now, and he'd grown another inch since November.
