Chapter 12: The Letter in the Safe
Imogen's POV
I found Desmond in the office that had been my father's, standing at the window with his coffee going cold.
The nameplate on the door said his name.
The photographs on the wall behind the desk were still my father's.
He didn't turn when I came in.
"Close the door," he said.
I closed it and stood with my back against it.
"You told a patient I wanted no contact."
He set the coffee down.
"Declan Maddox," he said. "He told you."
"This morning."
"I wondered how long it would take."
"Don't."
He turned around.
He looked ten years older than he had in the board room, and he did not try to hide it.
"Your sister asked me to tell him," he said.
"She stood in the corridor outside his room and said a man who owed his life to you would want you back. She said the family would lose you to him.
"I had been married twelve days. I said yes."
"Why?"
"Because I said yes to everything Fiona asked for that month. It was easier than the alternative." His mouth twisted. "That's the whole explanation, Imogen, and it's a poor one."
"You took away the one thing I might have wanted to hear."
"I know."
"A man spent three years looking for me."
"I know that too. I've watched him do it."
I crossed the room and put both hands flat on my father's desk.
"What else did she ask you to do?"
He didn't answer.
His eyes dropped to the bottom drawer of the desk, and then to his hands, and then to the door.
It was the same flicker I had seen in the hallway on Pinckney Street.
