Chapter 23: The Lobby

Fiona was waiting by the lobby's revolving door, with a canvas tote on her shoulder and her coat buttoned to the chin.

She had no makeup on.

Theo was not with her.

"Thank you for coming," she said. "I know you have a bay three."

"I have ten minutes."

"That's what I asked for."

We sat on the bench under the donor wall, where the brass names of the hospital's benefactors went up to the ceiling.

Our father's was fourth from the top, from the year he had endowed a surgical fellowship.

She looked at it for a while.

"I resigned from the development office this morning," she said. "I put it in writing, and I put it in with HR so there's no taking it back."

"Why?"

"Because every day I walked past this wall and brought him coffee, and I want to stop." Her mouth twisted. "And because I can't ask anyone to trust me while I'm standing in the building I used it against."

"What will you do?"

"Desmond and I are in an apartment in Cambridge, not together. He's in the one downstairs. Theo goes up and down the stairs between us." She gave a small, flat laugh. "We're seeing a counselor on Thursdays. I don't know what comes of it. I'm not going to promise it to anyone."

"That's honest."

"I'm trying to be."

She unzipped the tote.
