Chapter 22: Dumplings in Four Courtyards

Ma looked at the four courtyards of the Jiang old house for a long time, and then she asked where the kitchen was.

"Ma, you've been on a train for four hours. Sit."

"I've been sitting for four hours. A kitchen is how you find out what a house thinks of you."

She handed Anzhi the rice cooker and rolled up her sleeves.

Her eye fell on his open collar, and stayed there.

She said nothing at all.

She took the faded green scarf from her own neck, wound it twice around his, and tucked the ends in.

"It is cold in these courtyards," said Ma.

Behind him, Linchuan became deeply interested in the roofline.

She went through the moon gate with Dad at her heels, and the butler, who had never been marched anywhere in his life, trotting behind.

By five in the afternoon the front courtyard had a long table in it.

Ma had called for flour, and then more flour, and a big bowl, and pork and chives, and a rolling pin.

Within the hour six cooks, two maids, a driver, Anzhi's friend and the gardener were seated in rows, each with a round of dough.

"Pinch, then fold," said Ma. "Pinch, then fold. No, not like that. That is a lump. It's a dumpling."

She stood at the head of the table.

At her right hand sat Dad, on a plastic stool that the butler had found in the garage and polished with his own sleeve.
