Chapter 23: Seconds
"My court," said Anzhi. "My rules."
He said it at the door of the Pavilion Court, late, after the house had gone quiet.
The pomegranate was dropping its last leaves behind him, and he held a lantern.
Linchuan, in the gate, bowed his head gravely.
"What are they?"
"One," said Anzhi. "You don't speak unless I ask."
"That will be difficult for me."
"Two. Glasses off," said Anzhi.
Linchuan took them off, folded them, and put them in his pocket with great dignity.
"Three," said Anzhi, and found that his voice had gone rough. "You let me lead."
"Always," said Linchuan, "when you ask."
The door shut behind them.
The carved canopy bed that had cost more than the feed store stood in the lantern light with its curtains looped back.
Anzhi did not hurry.
He took his time over the jacket, and the shirt, and every button, as the other man had on the first night.
He kissed each place he uncovered.
He found a faint scar under the left collarbone and asked about it. It was a bicycle, aged nine.
"You had a bicycle?"
"I had a bicycle that was not mine. The butler taught me to ride it in the back lane."
"The butler," said Anzhi, with feeling, and kissed the scar.
Linchuan made a low sound and shut his eyes.
