Chapter 14: No

"Kneel," said Pei again, and the seal blazed.

Hanjue's whole body went white and rigid.

A sound came out of him that Chuhe had heard once before, in the old iron mould.

He did not kneel.

He stood with his knees locked and his hands shaking at his sides, and the sweat ran off his chin.

"No," he said, through his teeth.

"Kneel."

"No."

Pei's thin face changed for the first time that night.

"That is not possible," he said. "The seal takes you at the word."

"It hurts," Hanjue said, and he sounded astonished. "It hurts very much. Chuhe, it only hurts."

"Hanjue..."

"That is all it does. It only hurts."

He laughed, a raw broken gasp of a laugh, and wiped his mouth with the back of his wrist.

"I could not stand in the yard."

"I thought it was the seal holding me."

"But the seal never held me."

"It made me afraid, so I held myself."

He looked at Chuhe, and his eyes were bright and wet and clear.

"Remember that, later," he said. "I have a great deal I mean to ask you for."

Chuhe's throat closed.

Pei's hand tightened on the cord.

"Kneel," he snapped, and shook the seal like a bell.

Hanjue took a step toward him.

Pain dragged at him, and he took another.

He walked slowly, with the stance of a man carrying something heavy and level.

It was not a swordsman's walk.
