Chapter 15: Mardi Gras

I looked at the paper on the counter.

Then I looked at my husband.

Then I laughed.

It wasn't a nice laugh.

It came up out of me like steam out of a pot.

I had to hold on to the counter.

Luc waited with his hands in his pockets.

"Something funny?"

"Two million," I said, when I could breathe. "Luc. They're paying a hundred and forty for that seed. You told Mireille so against my barrels. A hundred and forty million for a jar of seeds."

His jaw moved.

"And you just walked in here and told me my notebooks are the part they can't buy without me."

"That's not what I said."

"It's exactly what you said." I pushed the paper back across the steel to him with one finger. "Thank you. That's the most useful thing you've told me in seven years."

He didn't pick it up.

He looked at me for a long time under the bare bulb.

Then he smiled.

It was the board-meeting smile, the one he uses right before a vote he's already counted.

"You think he's different," he said.

"Who?"

"My brother. You think he's the good one. The simple one with dirt on his hands."

"I think he never sold anybody's island."

"Ask him where he was at Mardi Gras."

I stopped with a jar in my hand.

"What?"

"Mardi Gras. Lafayette. The parade on Johnston Street. Mireille and I had a room at the hotel with the balcony." Luc straightened his cuff. "Etienne stood on the street under it and watched us. February. He's known since February, Jo. Seven months before you found out."
