Chapter 16: Walk Away

I read the margin note three times.

Then I folded the letter and held it against my chest, because my hands needed something to do.

"Tell me," I said. "All of it. And don't you dare make it pretty."

He didn't.

He told it with his hands flat on the hood of his truck.

Mardi Gras, in Lafayette.

Mireille said she was going to the parade with her girlfriends from work.

He drove up to surprise her, because it had been a bad winter, and he thought maybe a parade would help.

He saw her on a hotel balcony over Johnston Street, in a purple mask, with his brother's hand on her back.

"I stood on the street and caught beads," he said. "A man threw me a cup and I caught it. I stood there holding a plastic cup while my brother kissed my wife over a parade."

"And then?"

"I drove home. I slept on the porch. I didn't say anything to anybody."

"Why?"

"Because I was ashamed," he said. "Not of them. Of me. Of being the one it happened to."

"In March, Luc came out to the camp with that letter. He didn't say the word Houston. He said it was a family buyout. He wanted to run the company without me in the way, and he'd make it worth my while." Etienne looked at the envelope against my chest. "I knew why he really wanted me gone. He wanted me gone because of her. And I was so tired, Josette. I wanted out of that marriage and out of his shadow, and he handed me a door with three million dollars on it."

"So you signed."

"So I signed."

"And on Red Day, when I showed you the video."

"I found out he was selling the island the same minute you did. That's the truth." He swallowed. "And then you kissed me, and I thought if I told you about that letter right then, you'd think I'd been in on all of it. You'd walk away. So I didn't."
