Chapter 27: The Causeway

Luc's smile didn't move.

"I wrote it, Jo. I know what it says."

"Then you know paragraph nine."

I'd read it every night for a month, on Lise's mamma's bed under the blue tarp.

I didn't need the paper.

"If either spouse is the first to commit adultery during the marriage, that spouse forfeits all claim to the community property."

The lawn was so quiet I could hear a turkey fryer pop.

"You wrote 'first,'" I said. "You put it in for me. You were so sure it would be me, you never thought about the word."

"You slept with my brother."

"On August twenty-sixth. In a hurricane." I turned and looked at the woman in the white dress by the tents. "Mireille. When did it start?"

Mireille didn't hesitate.

"Christmas Eve," she said. "Last year. In the office, after Mémère's party. I've still got the texts, baby. Every one."

Luc looked at her like she'd stabbed him.

"Eight months," I said. "You were first by eight months. Your lawyer's going to tell you that on Monday, and he's going to charge you for it."

"The community," Luc said slowly.

"Every dollar we saved in seven years. The account in Lafayette you never let me look at." I came up one step, so I was eye to eye with him. "I'm not walking out in my rubber boots, Luc. You are."

He looked past me at the island.

Nobody on that lawn looked away.

Then he walked down the steps and through the crowd, and two hundred people stepped aside to let him through.

It wasn't the same.

Nobody touched him.

Nobody said a word.

He moved out on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a day early, so nobody would get the satisfaction of watching.

It didn't work.

The causeway is the only road off Pointe Rouge, and everybody knows when a truck is loading.
