The Taste of My Husband's Brother (A Wife's Revenge) novel · Chapter 5 of 32

Chapter 5: Mutual

I looked at the photo for a long time.

Long enough for Mireille to start smiling.

"Lise's freezer," she said. "Boudin by flashlight. I heard."

"Who took that?"

"Does it matter, baby? Half this island has a phone."

She blew a bubble and popped it.

"Here's how this goes. Luc sees this, and you're the wife who cheated with his brother. You know what his prenup says about cheating wives?"

"I signed it."

"Then you know you leave in your rubber boots."

Then I took out my own phone, found the video and turned the screen around.

I pressed play.

"Not on the barrels, baby. They leave rings on my dress."

Mireille stopped chewing.

I let it run.

I let it run until her laugh cut off.

"And Etienne?"

"Etienne gets his boat. He's a simple man."

I paused it on her face, laughing into my husband's shoulder.

"Your husband's seen this," I said. "Mémère's heard about it. Nobody else has."

Her jaw worked.

"You send yours, I send mine," I said. "Mine goes to the Houston people, the bank, the priest and every bottling-line worker you're about to lay off. Yours goes to Luc."

"You wouldn't."

"I failed forty barrels in front of the CEO this morning. Try me."

"Christmas," she said. "Everybody keeps their little phones in their little pockets till Christmas."

"Till Christmas."

"And after that, baby, it won't matter anyway."

She unlocked the door and walked out, and the cinnamon hung in the room after her.

I threw up after all.

Luc didn't talk to me about the barrels at home.

He didn't have to.

Mémère came down to the barn that afternoon on her cane, looked at the forty open barrels and said one sentence to the crew.
