Chapter 22: Seal and Tongue

The Regent walked into the Hall of Supreme Harmony at noon in a white prisoner's robe, with his own hands tied.

Nobody had tied them but himself.

He had held out his wrists to the first Hu sentry at the gate and said, "I am the Regent of Liang."

"Take me to your master."

Linyuan knew because he watched from the corridor, sick to his stomach, with the Emperor's cold hand in his.

Then the sentry had run, and a dozen wolf-badged soldiers had come for the Regent.

They marched Duan Shiyan up the red carpet.

The elder Hu received him on the dais with his arms spread.

He stood beside the dragon throne in a gold robe nobody had given him leave to wear.

Two hundred ministers stood in rows, gone grey with fear.

"My dear Regent." The old man beamed. "How good of you to save us the trouble."

"Where is the Emperor?" Duan Shiyan said.

"The boy has run, I am afraid. He has been very ill, and not himself."

"But we shall have him back directly, and he will yield with a good grace. Won't he?"

"Yes, Uncle," said Zhao Yunhe.

Every head turned.

The Emperor came up the carpet on his own two feet, in the yellow robe, with the strapped hand tucked into his sleeve.

Linyuan walked at his left in his grey-green taster's coat, with a tin cup in one hand and the other hand on his belt.
