Chapter 20: The Ultimatum
Warren came in.
He walked past Mercer into the sitting room and set a manila folder on the glass table.
He looked around at the pancake bag and the tangled robe.
Two lawyers in gray suits stood by the door, not looking at anything.
I came out of the bedroom in a robe, with my braid undone and my arms crossed.
Bram stood behind me, silent, and Dex was at my side.
"Ms. Dunmore," Warren said.
"I won't keep you."
"It's five in the morning."
"This is a short meeting."
He opened the folder.
Inside was a thin stack of pages with a hospital crest at the top.
I knew the crest.
It was the clinic in Dayton where I had gone at twenty-one, shaking, with my mother holding my hand.
"Where did you get that?" I said.
"The federation has excellent lawyers."
"That's mine."
"Yes.
And so, increasingly, is the story."
