Chapter 17: Beg

Torin met me at the end of the path, and we went up the hill together.

The grounds were still empty, with the fires unlit and the witness-stones in shadow.

Davin stood alone on the dais with his hands at his sides.

He had not shaved, and the jacket he wore was yesterday's.

When he saw me he came down the steps.

"Not him," he said, looking at Torin. "Please. Just you."

"He stays."

"Three steps," Torin said, and stopped where he was.

Davin and I stood a few feet apart in the cold.

"I didn't know," he said.

"I believe that."

"I swear on the Moon, Brynn. My father never said a word to me." He rubbed his face. "I was Alpha because he told me I was. I thought it was blood."

"It was my arm."

"I know that now." His voice broke on it. "I walked up to your table with a speech and took the vine off you, and I thought I was being kind."

"You were being tidy."

He flinched.

"I'm asking you for the seat," he said.

"Now?"

"I'll make you any promise. The lodge, the stores, a place at the Council's table, anything you name. Sable and I will go to the south den, if that's what you want. I'll say whatever you tell me to say." His eyes were wet. "I can't be Alpha of nothing. I won't know who I am."

I looked at him, the boy who used to share his sandwiches with me behind the cookhall.

I had cried for him once, in the dark.
