Chapter 12: Moon Wolf

"Let her go," I said.

Hugh's hand tightened on my mother's throat.

"The children and your signature," he said. "That's all I want."

"Give me the three of them, and sign a paper tonight that you'll never come back."

"Then she walks to the infirmary and sleeps in her own bed."

"Or?"

"Or this is a very old woman, and her heart is weak."

Behind me, Thane made a low sound I had never heard from a human mouth.

Lorcan caught his arm.

"Don't," Lorcan said. "He'll do it."

I looked at my mother.

Her eyes had gone sharp again.

They were clear and hazel and wide awake, and they were looking straight at me.

"Sorrel," she said, hoarse under his hand. "I'm sorry. I should have told you."

"Mom, don't talk."

"I sealed it," she said. "The day you were born."

"I put it to sleep so he'd never find it."

Hugh frowned.

"Careful," he said, very quietly.

"You were never wolfless, my darling," said my mother.

"You were born with a Moon wolf. The last one in the world."

The humming of the stones rose until I could feel it in my ribs.

"Enough," Hugh snapped, and he shook her. "Be quiet."

My mother smiled at him.

It was a calm, terrible smile.

"Now," she said to me. "Wake your wolf. She's been asleep for twenty-four years."
