Chapter 11: The Back Seat
He moved over.
I got into the driver's seat and shut the door, and the rain came down on the roof in a long gray roar.
"Back," I said.
"Not here.
"I want the back seat."
He looked at me.
Then he got out into the rain and went around and got in behind my seat.
I understood what that cost him.
He sat with his back against the door and his hands on his knees, where I could see him in the mirror.
I climbed over the console and sat beside him on the leather, with the case between our feet.
My hands would not stop shaking.
"He came up behind me," I said.
I said it to the window, and the glass fogged.
"My uncle put his hand on my shoulder, and I couldn't move.
"I sat there.
"I let him."
"Lena," Niko said.
"I'm telling you because it's the one rule on that paper I broke.
"I broke it for him.
"I didn't break it for you."
I turned my head.
"Why him?" I said.
"Why can I sit in a room with you and not with him?"
"I do not know," Niko said.
His voice was soft.
"I think it is not about who stands behind you.
"I think it is about who you have decided to expect."
I took his hand.
It was cold from the car and big, and it closed around mine very gently.
I held it in my lap.
"I want something," I said.
"Tell me."
"I want to stop thinking.
"I want all of it to be mine, the way I decide.
"I want you to do exactly what I say."
