Chapter 15: The Girl in the Shed

Celia moved while every eye was on the paper in the old woman's lap.

She slid the blanket off her shoulders, dropped it on the chair, and walked down the porch steps as if she were going for a glass of water.

Then she ran.

She cut across the dark meadow toward the helipad, white dress flashing, her shoes already in her hand.

"Celia!" Quinton shouted.

"Let her go," the lawyer said, quickly. "She does not have to stay."

Demi was already moving.

She did not run hard, because she did not need to.

She took the long way around the generator trailer, came out ahead of Celia on the gravel path, and planted herself in the open gate of the helipad fence.

Celia saw her and skidded.

"Get out of my way."

"No."

"I'll scream."

"You already do," Demi said. "It is the only thing you are good at."

Behind them, the lamps of the porch stage swung and followed.

A camera operator jogged up the path with the rig on her shoulder, the kind woman who had stayed with Demi since the first night.

She stopped ten feet off and held the lens steady.

Celia saw the red light.

She turned in a half circle.

Cameras on the porch, cameras on the lawn, cameras on the roof of the control tent.

Sixty million people, and no one to cry for.

"They're going to ruin me," she whispered.

"Yes," Demi said.

"You don't understand."

"Then say it so I do."

Celia's chest heaved.

The four notes began, low in her throat, and she bit down on her own lip to stop them.

She looked at the lens, and her voice changed.

It went flat and clear, with none of the sob in it.

"Fine," Celia said. "You want to hear it? I pushed myself down those stairs."

Footsteps pounded up behind them.

Quinton, the lawyer, her father, a crowd.
