Chapter 5: Raw Feed

"You lied," Demi said.

"I did."

Drake Rafferty stopped on the other side of her fire and shook the rain off his jacket.

He did not look sorry.

"I watched your feed until the nine o'clock highlight came on," he said. "Then I watched the highlight. They do not match, and I have an hour before my lawyers wake up and tell me not to do this."

"Do what?"

"This."

He turned to the camera operator and held out his hand.

"Give me your hard line."

She handed him the thin black cable from her rig.

Drake knelt and plugged it into a satellite case he had carried off the helicopter, and typed fast.

"As of now," he said, "your raw feed is public. Every camera on this ridge streams unedited under the main banner, no cuts, no captions. Anyone can switch to it."

Demi stared at him.

"You said private. You said exclusive footage when it mattered."

"This matters."

"You also said you would stay off the mountain."

"I changed my mind."

"That was not the deal."

"No," Drake said. "It was not."

He stood.

Up close, his green eyes were tired, and the rain ran down the sharp line of his jaw.

"Be angry at me tomorrow," he said. "Tonight, let the world see what the edit hid."

Demi held his gaze a moment longer.

Then she sat down and put another log on the fire.

"There is tea," she said. "It is fir needles."

"I have had worse."

He drank it from her tin cup, standing, and pulled a face.

"No, I have not."

In the morning, the number on the camera operator's screen read four million.

Demi was at the water hole before sunrise, filling a bottle.

The camera operator stood on a flat rock behind her.

Dean and Bruce came down the trail with their own crew, their packs heavy, Dean's right hand wrapped in white gauze.

"Move," Dean said. "We need the spring."
