Chapter 10: One More Winter
The Emperor read the ledger standing up.
He didn't say anything until he reached the receipt at the back.
Then he closed the book very gently and put it down.
"Captain," he said to the guard at the door. "Bring me the chancellor. Tonight."
"Majesty. Alive?"
"For now."
The captain went.
I got up from the table and went after him, and put myself in the doorway.
"Call him back."
The Emperor looked at me like I'd spoken another language.
"He sold your blood by the jar," he said. "He poured tailings into a well in my own house and nearly killed a girl of twenty-one. You're asking me to wait?"
"I'm asking you not to do it in the dark."
"I don't care where I do it."
"I do."
Agatha quietly took the ledger off the table and walked out with it.
She shut the door behind her.
"Listen to me," I said. "If you drag him out of bed tonight, what does the court hear in the morning? The tyrant killed his chancellor because his pet showed him a book from a fish market."
"It's his seal."
"Seals get copied. He'll say I forged it. He'll say you've lost your mind over a wolf girl."
"Let him say it with his head in a basket."
"Then he wins. Kill him in the dark and they'll believe every lie he tells about you."
The Emperor turned away and put both hands on the back of a chair.
"And the Tarrow end of it?" I said. "The Alpha? The mine? The man who bought it from them? You hang the chancellor and the rest of them close the cellar door and you never find another jar."
"So what do you want?"
"I want him to answer in front of everyone," I said. "The court. The packs. The people in that market. I want him to stand there and not have a single word."
