Chapter 32: Clean Water
A year later, on Tribute Day, the Coil's kitchen smelled of burning sugar.
"It's meant to do that," Ossian said.
He was standing at the stove in an apron with flour on his black trousers, stirring a copper pot with a wooden spoon.
The pot was smoking.
"It isn't," said the woman with flour on her arms. "Nothing is meant to do that."
"It's jam."
"It was jam."
The newest tribute sat on the table with her feet on the bench, watching him.
She had a slate on her knee where she was teaching three kitchen boys their letters.
They'd all stopped to watch the pot.
"You've got to take it off the heat," she told him.
"I know how jam works."
"Then why's it black?"
He looked into the pot.
He took it off the heat.
The kitchen table was so crowded we'd had to bring in the bench from the map room.
Agatha sat at the head of it with her keys at her belt and the captain of the guard at her elbow.
