Chapter 12: The Head of the Table

Richard Prescott gave a dinner every Sunday for the board.

There were ten chairs at his long table, and that night every one of them was full.

We walked in at ten past eight without knocking.

Gavin had the front door key. I had the notebook, which he had handed back to me in the car without a word.

The dining room was lit by candles.

Eight board members sat with their napkins in their laps.

At the head of the table sat Richard, in a dark suit, with a glass of red wine.

At his right hand sat my mother.

She wore a pale blue cardigan I didn't know.

She looked small in the high-backed chair and very straight.

"Mama," I said.

"Hazel," she said, and her eyes went to the candle in front of her.

"Hazel, Gavin." Richard smiled. "You're late. We've already started the soup."

"Let her go," I said.

"Your mother is my guest. She asked for a quiet dinner. I thought you'd enjoy the company."

"She asked?"

"Ask her yourself."

I looked at my mother.

She did not look back.

Gavin put a hand against the small of my back.

"Father, you took her out of a clinic in the middle of the night."

"I took her to a house with a doctor on call and a garden." He sipped his wine. "I invited my board to meet her. They've heard a great deal about the family I'm said to have wronged. Now they can hear it from the family."
