Chapter 19: Her Father's Bench
We dressed in the dark and drove to Ruby's in six minutes.
The street was quiet.
A black car sat at the curb under the streetlight with its engine off.
On the stoop of Ruby's building, under the yellow porch lamp, sat Richard Prescott with his cane across his knees.
Across from him, on the second step, in Ruby's bathrobe, sat my mother.
Ruby stood in the doorway with her arms folded and a cast-iron pan in one hand.
"He rang the bell," she said when we reached her. "Your mother came down before I could stop her."
"I'm all right," my mother said.
I stopped on the walk.
Gavin put his hand on my back, and I felt him ready to move.
"I asked her for five minutes," Richard said. "She gave me ten."
"Say what you came to say," I said.
"I came to say it to her."
My mother didn't turn her head.
"Go on, Richard."
He took a folded paper from inside his coat.
"This is a quitclaim deed to the property on Calumet Street," he said. "It transfers the land and what's left of the building to you, Mrs. Brennan, free of any claim. My lawyer signed it an hour ago."
"I'm not trading you anything for it," my mother said.
"I'm not asking you to."
"Then why?"
"Because I sat across the street from that shop for three hours," he said, "and I've thought about nothing else since I told my son."
He held the paper out.
My mother looked at it for a long time.
"You think I forgive you," she said.
"No."
"Good. I don't."
"I know."
"You put my husband in a bed and made him watch me sign his life away."
"Yes."
"You forged his name. You let me think for nine years it was kindness."
"Yes," Richard said.
She took the paper.
She folded it once more and put it in the pocket of Ruby's bathrobe.
