Tavrian arrived at the ball preparations to find a chair waiting for his judgment.
Darian had put it between two smaller seats.
The card on one named Maerielle.
The other named Cyralise.
The duke looked at the central chair and then at the host beside it.
"Whose idea was that?" he asked.
The host gestured toward the cousin with relief.
He'd apparently been waiting for someone else to dislike the arrangement first.
Darian came forward.
"A little reconciliation before the court," he said.
"One of them has to be admired more?" Tavrian asked.
"People enjoy an answer."
"They can ask either woman what she wants."
Darian smiled with exaggerated patience.
"You understand the occasion better than that."
The duke did understand.
He'd spent years letting people use the court's appetite for humiliation while calling himself too reserved to participate.
