Chapter 17: The Refusal Wasn't a Disaster
Maerielle had prepared three possible responses to the duke declining her invitation.
Thessa looked at the notes and then at the reply that had actually arrived.
"You can read that one," she suggested.
"I have."
"Then you can decide what you'd like for supper."
"There's one more message," Thessa added.
"The duke asked me to tell you the ball seating is ordinary now."
Maerielle stopped holding the notes.
"Ordinary how?"
"No central chair and no ranking of anyone," Thessa said.
"The host is sending the big chair to the kitchen. The cook says it's the right height for shelling peas."
"Did Tavrian ask me to thank him?" Maerielle asked.
"He asked me to tell you and to ask for nothing."
Maerielle put down the speech of thanks she had already begun in her head.
She looked at the preparations she'd made for enduring rejection gracefully.
There was a book she disliked because important women recommended it.
