Maerielle discovered Tavrian disliked the sweet pastries she'd chosen for their outing.
He told her after she'd bought two.
"You could have said before," she replied.
"You looked happy choosing them."
She looked down at the warm paper parcels.
"I was."
"Then you can still be happy eating them."
They stood at the edge of the courtyard fair with musicians playing too loudly behind the nearest stall.
Maerielle liked the noise more than she'd expected.
Nobody was asking her to make a speech over it.
She bit into the first pastry and got honey on her glove.
Tavrian offered a handkerchief.
She took it without pretending she'd intended the spill.
"You can choose something you like," she told him.
He bought plain roasted nuts and offered her the bag.
