Chapter 15: Two Sisters

Kyrian was already reaching for the sword belt on the back of his chair.

"No," Ravielle said.

"He's had men on your back stair."

"And if the Duke of Vaelhart walks into my cousin's house with a sword three weeks before the Assize, Damien will cry on the Emperor's shoes until they hang you for it." She snatched her cloak off the floor. "She's my sister. I'll fetch her."

He looked at her with his shirt still half out of his breeches.

"One hour," he said. "Then I come with the sword."

"Make it two. I'm thorough."

The dower house sat at the far end of the Ardentis walled garden, behind a yew hedge, with a lamp burning in every downstairs window.

In the narrow hall a man was coming down the stairs in a heavy riding cloak, saddlebags over his shoulder.

He was whistling through his teeth.

Ravielle knew that whistle.

She had last heard it an arm's length from her face, through a curtain, in the Silver Hare.

He brushed past her and Hanne and out into the night.

Hanne looked at Ravielle.

Ravielle put her finger to her lips and opened the parlor door.

Damien sat by the fire in his shirtsleeves, gloves on, a glass of wine in his hand.

Liliane sat at his writing desk with a pen.

There was a sheet of paper under her hand, half written, and beside the blotter lay a small brass seal.
