Chapter 8: The Lily Pond
"I can't," Ravielle said.
"You can't, or you won't?"
"There's only me, Liliane. I'm what's here."
Liliane made a sound.
Ravielle took her by the wrist.
"Come with me."
"Let go of me."
"No."
She pulled her half-sister down the back passage, past the dark kitchen, and out through the garden door into the cold.
Liliane came because Ravielle didn't give her a choice.
The walled garden was black and silver under a half moon.
The lily pond lay in the middle of it, iced over at the edges, the dead pads frozen flat in the black water.
Ravielle stopped at the stone rim.
Liliane stood beside her, barefoot on the frosty gravel, her teeth starting to chatter.
Ravielle unpinned her cloak and threw it around Liliane's shoulders.
It wasn't kindly done.
She flung it.
Liliane clutched it shut anyway.
"Why are we out here?"
"You were nine," Ravielle said. "You had on a yellow dress with a sash. Father had brought it back from the coast for you."
Liliane went still under the cloak.
"He'd never brought me a dress," Ravielle said. "Not once. He brought me books, because my mother liked books, and he couldn't look at me without seeing her."
"Ravielle."
"You were standing right here, showing the gardener's boy how the sash tied. You were so pleased with yourself. You were happy."
Ravielle looked at the black water.
"So I walked up behind you and pushed you in."
Liliane said nothing.
"You went under. You came up screaming with weed in your hair. I stood here and watched you, and I didn't put my hand out, and I didn't call for anyone."
"The gardener pulled me out," Liliane whispered.
"Yes."
"I had a fever for a week."
