Chapter 11: Anchor Stone

The Warden sent them to the village on a Saturday, with a notebook and an order to report on the anchor stone.

"The one behind the inn," he said, in the hall. "The Board has heard it has been behaving oddly."

"Odd how?" Draconia asked.

"It has not said," said the Warden, and went back to his tea.

They walked down the long road to Low Harrow in watery sunshine, Vivienne ahead with a basket and Georgina beside her.

Harry two paces behind Draconia on the wall side.

She noticed that she had stopped telling him to walk beside her.

He noticed nothing, or seemed not to.

Georgina's father kept the inn at the bottom of the hill, a long low building with a yard and a stable and a sign so weathered that nobody remembered the picture.

He met them at the gate in his apron, a big man with Georgina's long jaw and a face that had been sunburnt for fifty years.

"It's out the back," he said. "Mind the hens."

The meadow behind the stables sloped up toward the hill, and in the middle of it stood a grey stone twice the height of a man.

It leaned slightly, and moss had grown up its north side in a thick green skirt.

Draconia had seen the standing stones from the gallery window every night for two months.

She had never once stood beside one.

It was larger than it looked.

"Go on," said Georgina's father. "Put a hand on it."

She stepped up and laid her palm on the stone.

It was warm.
