Chapter 7: The Quill
By the middle of October the library had a table that nobody else sat at, because Draconia had sat at it first.
Vivienne was lying across the end of it with her cheek on a book about wards.
Georgina was reading a letter from home with a pencil behind her ear.
Harry Peverell came in at four with an armful of books and stopped.
There was one empty chair, and it was next to hers.
"Is this one taken?" he asked.
"Everything is taken, Peverell. That's the nature of a chair."
He sat down.
He opened his essay on the history of the standing stones and took out a quill.
Draconia watched him begin to write.
He held the quill in his whole fist, with the shaft crossed behind his thumb, as though the writing were something he was strangling.
Ink was already creeping up the side of his left hand, where he dragged it over the wet line.
"Nobody ever showed you how to hold that," she said.
"They showed me," said Harry.
"And?" said Draconia.
"I preferred my way."
"Your way has gone over your cuff."
He looked at his cuff, which had a blue stain across it, and shrugged.
"It's a cuff," he said.
"You take your tea black with no sugar, you read the last page of every book first, and you tap the table twice before you stand up."
She heard herself say it, in a bright level voice, and could not stop.
"You walk on the left of anything with a wall, and you never sit with your back to a door. If somebody speaks to you in the hall, you look at their shoes first, and then you look at them, and you do it so fast I don't think you know."
