Chapter 18: Roderick's Last Offer

Elowen's POV

Dorian slept for two days in Hester's loft with silver burning in his side.

I sat by him for most of them.

On the sixth morning he opened his eyes, said my name and asked for soup.

I laughed so hard that Hester threw me out.

That was the same morning Roderick asked to see me.

He sent the guards with a message, and I almost refused.

Then I thought about the coins in the pouch on my belt, and I said yes.

They brought him into the great hall at noon.

The long tables had been pushed back, and half of Greyhollow filled the benches.

Verity stood at my right shoulder, and the old sergeant at my left.

Dorian sat on a chair by the wall, grey and bandaged, with one hand pressed to his wounded side.

I sat on the high seat.

I had not planned to.

Roderick came in between two guards, in a clean shirt, with his hands bound in front of him.

He had shaved.

It made him look younger, and it made me hate him more.

He stopped in front of the dais and did not kneel.

"Elowen," he said.

"General Wycliffe."

"General." His mouth twisted. "I'm told you were attacked on the Stormreach road."

"By six men with silver knives."

"I had nothing to do with that."

"I know."

That stopped him.

I took the leather pouch from my belt and tipped the silver coins onto the arm of the high seat.

"The survivor told Verity everything. A beta with thin hair hired them at a warehouse on the east road in the dark before dawn, with coin from your vault."

"Colm," Roderick said.

"Colm. While he was running, with your key in his hand."

"Then you know I..."

"I know you left your vault key in your boot," I said, "for a man you knew was skimming you."

A few people in the benches snorted.
