Chapter 14: The Terrace

"Come up," Wyatt said. "Alone. I'll tell the doorman."

He gave me the address of his penthouse.

I knew every floor of it.

I had been inside twice, both times to drop off Carrie's laundry.

I taped the transmitter to my breastbone with the medical tape, low enough that a sweater hid it.

It was cold against my skin.

The tracker disc went into my jeans pocket.

I pressed the button and counted three seconds.

A tiny green light blinked once and went steady.

I didn't know whether Jack's phone was in his pocket, or in a drawer, or at the bottom of the harbor.

I pulled my sweater down over it and walked out past the man asleep in the car.

It took a cab and twenty minutes to reach Harbor Point.

The doorman nodded me into a mirrored elevator, and I rode it up twenty-two floors with my own white face looking back at me.

Wyatt opened the door himself in shirtsleeves, with a glass in his hand.

On the console behind him lay a cream envelope and a black thumb drive, set out side by side.
