Chapter 17: The Clinic
The younger officer took out his cuffs.
He looked embarrassed to be holding them in a room full of people hooked to machines.
"Ma'am, please put your hands behind your back."
I stood up from my mother's chair.
Every head in the unit had turned toward us, and forty people in recliners were watching the cameraman lift his shoulder.
That was why Margaret had come.
She wanted the picture of the thief in handcuffs, next to a sick woman, on the morning news.
"Let me say one thing first," I said.
"You can say it at the station," said the officer.
"I'd like to say it here."
I turned my back to Margaret and faced the camera.
My voice came out steadier than my knees.
"My name is Jo Pinkett.
"This morning I gave a federal statement that I lied to the police about my friend Carrie Thurmond."
