Chapter 22: Director

Wyatt hit Jack's chest.

Jack didn't step back.

He put one hand flat on Wyatt's breastbone and held him there.

"Stay where you are," he said.

"Take your hands off me. Do you know who I am?"

"Yes."

Jack took the microphone from my hand, gently, and turned to the room.

"Governor," he said. "Ladies and gentlemen. I apologize for the interruption."

His voice was low, and it went all the way to the back wall without effort.

"My name is Jack Thurmond. I am Carrie Thurmond's brother."

A hush went over the tables.

"For fourteen months I was told lies about how my sister died.

"I am also the Director of the federal Public Corruption Task Force."

Nobody moved.

"Eleven years in the Army. Three weeks in this office. It was long enough."

At the Governor's table, the Governor set down his glass.

At every door of the ballroom, a waiter in a white jacket reached under the lapel and came up with a gold badge.
