Chapter 24: The Aisle
The church was full by eleven o'clock.
I stood in the vestibule in a plain ivory dress, with my hair down and a bouquet of white asters.
It was the same room where a lawyer had once stood with a forged page.
Behind me, three children were arguing in whispers.
"I'm the flower girl," Poppy said. "You two just walk."
"I want to carry the ring," Finn said.
"You'll drop it."
"I won't."
"Give Sebastian the ring," I said. "He doesn't drop things."
Sebastian took the little velvet box in both hands.
He wore a small gray suit that matched his eyes.
"Mommy," he said. "Is he in there?"
"He's in there."
"How do you know?"
I looked through the gap in the doors.
A hundred and eighty people sat in the pews, and at the far end of the aisle, a tall man in a dark suit stood at the altar with his hands clasped in front of him.
Killian.
He hadn't moved.
He was looking at the doors, and he was white around the mouth.
"I know," I said.
The pastor nodded from the front of the church.
The organist lifted her hands.
I took a breath.
I took Poppy's hand, and Sebastian's, and Finn's, and the doors swung open.
The organ began.
It was the same piece I had waited through five years ago.
Every head in the church turned.
I had thought I would be afraid.
I wasn't.
I walked down the aisle with my children in a line, and the music filled the high ceiling.
On the left, our neighbor stood in the third row with his two grown sons, and the older one gave me a thumbs-up.
