Chapter 7: Rain

"Yes," Killian said. "It's my real name."

"Okay," Poppy said, and put her head back down on his shoulder.

She didn't ask anything else, and I let my breath out through my teeth.

He drove us home at dawn with both hands on the wheel and the dashboard light on his face.

My mother met us at the door in her robe and took Poppy from my arms without looking at him.

"Thank you for the ride, Mr. Draycott," she said.

"Of course, Mrs. Gleeson."

She shut the door before he'd reached the bottom step.

I told myself she was tired.

We had made up on Saturday night, after the shouting about April.

She had cried and said she only wanted to protect me, and I had forgiven her before midnight.

It rained for two days after that.

On the second evening, the kids were finally asleep after a fight over a stuffed rabbit, and my mother was folding laundry in front of the television.

"I'll be ten minutes," I told her.

"Take your time, baby," she said, and she didn't look up.

I found his coat in the hall closet, where I had hung it without thinking.

It was a good gray wool, and it smelled like him.

I stood holding it for a full minute.

Then I took it across the street in the rain, because I told myself a person returns a coat.

He opened the door in a T-shirt, and he looked at me soaked to the skin on his porch.
