Chapter 16: The Vestibule
"Mom, the whole town goes to First Methodist," I said.
"That's why," she said.
She put her glasses back on their chain and went down my stairs to Daddy's truck without another word.
On Sunday morning Jesse and I carried a brass easel up the church steps at a quarter past ten.
The print was in the biggest frame the hardware store had, under plain glass.
We set it in the vestibule, right between the two doors, where nobody could walk into the sanctuary without passing it.
An usher in a seersucker suit came over to tell us we couldn't leave that there.
He looked at the picture and didn't finish the sentence.
He stood with the bulletins in his hand and read her face.
"That's Faye," he said slowly. "That's the widow's girl, from Pickett Street."
"Yes, sir," I said.
"I was in her class." He sounded like he'd been woken up. "She sat behind me in civics. Where did she go?"
People came up the steps in twos and threes, and every one of them slowed at the easel.
