Chapter 17: The Trade
"Daddy, no," I said.
Mom put her fork down so hard it rang on the plate.
"I'm only asking," Daddy said. "A man likes to know what things cost."
"It costs everything," Mom said. "You heard me tell it."
"I heard you." He reached over and covered her hand with his. "I'm just asking."
Jesse looked at me across the table, and I looked at my father.
He went back to his butter beans and asked Jesse about the water plant, and he laughed at the right places.
By pie, I'd let myself believe him.
On Tuesday at eleven his mail truck pulled up on Main under my window.
He came up my outside stairs with my mail in a rubber band, which he'd never once done on that route.
"Your darkroom door sticks," he said. "I heard it Saturday."
"It's always stuck."
"Well." He took a butter knife out of his shirt pocket. "Not anymore."
He knelt at my darkroom door and worked the latch with the knife, humming "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" off-key.
