Chapter 18: The Green Dress
The green dress had been Carmela's idea.
She had come to the guest wing on the fifth of December with a garment bag over one arm and put it on the bed without a word.
"Wear it," she said.
"It was Serafina's," I said, looking at the tag.
"It was never worn," said Carmela.
"She bought it for a Christmas and died in September.
"It has been in my closet for fourteen months."
"Carmela."
"It is a good color," she said.
"It should be worn by someone who will keep it."
She went out.
I stood with the garment bag in my hands.
I had not asked her whether the dress was a message, or an apology, or only a gift.
I did not think she knew either.
The night before the supper the compound was lit from top to bottom.
The women were in the kitchen until eleven, rolling dough, shouting in Sicilian.
The long dining room had been set with twenty-two place cards on the left and eighteen on the right and one great carved chair at the head.
I had not seen the chair in daylight before.
It was black oak, with a high back, and it had been Nico's father's.
I went upstairs at eleven.
The twins were asleep in Teo's room, in a heap, with a night-light shaped like a fish.
I kissed all three heads and shut the door.
Nico was in the walk-in closet at the end of the hall, in his shirtsleeves, with the light on.
It was a long narrow room lined with shelves.
At the far end hung a full-length mirror in a dark wood frame, tilted slightly on its stand.
He turned when I came in.
"Put it on," he said.
"The dress?"
"Your mother-in-law has been fussing since noon," he said.
"I told her I'd see for myself."
"It's a dress."
